The National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) is a social safety net program that provides employment to over 35 million households and has an annual budget of Rs 39,000 crores / about US$8 billion for 2009–10. Despite its statutory mandate for social accountability at all levels of implementation, NREGS does not reach its intended benefi ciaries because of low awareness of their entitlements under this program. In 2007, the CUTS Centre for Consumer Action, Research & Training (CUTS CART) in Rajasthan introduced a social accountability intervention in Sirohi District to evaluate the implementation of NREGS and inform higher levels of policy making.
